CHAPTER NINE
Four days after I officially became a missing girl I was moved from the blood red house to a larger house near the top of the hill. I didn't bother to notice the color. By this time I spent most of my days in a haze. Although I didn't guzzle the alcohol as greedily as Lizzie, I did nip at it frequently throughout the day. It helped lessen the pain in my back and in my heart.
Since the branding I hadn't seen Yasiel or any other men for that matter. It was just Lizzie and I and then the others when I entered the big house. When I say big house don't misunderstand me. I wasn't moved into a luxurious mansion or exquisite concubine's quarters. This house had four rooms. The kitchen had hardly any cupboards and the table had one leg shorter than the other three. The bathroom had a bathtub that was discolored with black mold creeping up the sides and no toilet, only a hole in the ground. Then there was the main room and a bedroom. The main room had sleeping bundles shoved up against the walls and bean bag chairs with their filling oozing out placed in a semi-circle around a box television. The television had those rabbit ears that I had seen on re-runs of 1980s television shows. The bedroom had a simple bed with a humble quilt that was entirely out of place in this house along with a crucifix hanging over the window. I shivered.
"Whose room is this?"
"It is for Yasiel when he . . . when he visits." Lizzie seemed to choke on this last word.
"What is he? Your boyfriend?" I said it snotty because why did I have to be gracious? Why did I have to extend kindness to anyone who played a part in ripping me from my other existence?
"Of course not," she said sharply, drawing in her breath as if I had plunged a knife deep within her chest.
"I sleep there." She pointed to a bundle near the door. "We save the bed for the children."
That's when I noticed a few sad looking stuffed animals lying about the floor and children's clothing mixed in with the few clothes that hung on a makeshift laundry line across the kitchen. As if on cue, two children came running into the home with a haggard looking woman following close behind; on her hip was another child with dirty cheeks and tangled hair. I couldn't tell if it was a boy or girl.
"¿Quién es esta chica?" The woman spat.
"My name is Sophia," I answered with my American accent.
The woman raised an eyebrow and looked at Lizzie. "¿Americano?"
Lizzie nodded and the woman laughed. "Aye, this one is going to have an adjustment. Yes?"
Lizzie ignored her and so did I. "This is Marcela and these are her children: Juan, Pablo, and Lucia."
"You have to watch the children tonight. Yasiel wants me working a double." She handed the child off to Lizzie.
"Take care of yourself tonight, Marcela," Lizzie cautioned.
